Obituary for Murray Allan Goodwin
Murray Allan Goodwin, in his 93rd year, died peacefully, with his wife and children by his side at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, Ontario on Saturday, January 11th, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Pearl Goodwin and his brothers, George and Morris. Murray is survived by his wife of 67 years Patricia (Hannon) and his brother Warren, his children; Alana (Boris Procyk), Wallace (Maureen Dougherty), Morris (Pam) and Margaret as well as six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Murray was born in Port Arthur, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) on January 1, 1927 and lived for 15 years in Ethelbert, Manitoba. In 1942, his family moved to Gypsumville, Manitoba.
The family moved again in 1944 to the town of Atikokan, Ontario in June 1945. Starting in 1945, Murray worked in the Data Processing department at Steep Rock Iron Mines until the mine closed in the late 1970s. He moved to Sault Ste. Marie in the 1980s and worked in the IT department at Algoma Steel until retiring in 1992.
After retiring Murray and Pat moved to the Morningside Retirement Community in New Hamburg just outside of Kitchener, Ontario. In 2010 they moved to Mississauga, Ontario.
Murray was an avid volunteer. He served on the Atikokan Library Board and the Atikokan Lions Club. He was elected as a town councilor in Atikokan for six years. As Chairman of the Industrial Development committee he helped attract a Particle Board Plant and Ontario Hydro Thermal Generating Plant to the community.
His pastimes were fishing, badminton, basketball and curling. In his later years Murray enthusiastically took up wood carving, art and genealogy.
Murray always said that his biggest accomplishment was his marriage and lifelong loving partnership with his wife Patricia.
