Obituary for Halina Kwiatkowski
Halina Kwiatkowski, nee Sienko, known to friends as “Hala”, passed away peacefully on August 19th at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where she was a longtime resident in the Veterans wing.
Halina was born on May 12, 1923 in Suwałki, Poland. In May of 1941 she became a liaison officer fighting for the Polish Underground Army. After the Germans defeated the Poles in the Warsaw Uprising, Halina was captured and imprisoned in the Oberlangen work camp until her liberation in April of 1945. For her service, Halina was awarded the following medals:
Home Army Cross, Poland
Bronze Cross of Merit with Swords, Poland
War Medal, Poland
International Prisoner of War Medal, England
War Veterans Medal, England
After her liberation, Halina made her way to England where she met Władyslaw Kwiatkowski. They were married on June 4th 1949 and they immigrated shortly after to Toronto.
From the time she arrived in Canada, Halina immersed herself in many volunteer organizations such as the Polish Veterans Association, Polish Scouting, the Federation of Polish Women and Polish Canadian Society of Music and others. She received numerous awards for her volunteerism including the 50-year Volunteer Award from the province of Ontario.
Halina will be forever remembered by her son Andrew, daughter-in-law Christine and by her granddaughters, Monika and Katya.
