Many of us lifeguards met at the Port Arthur YMCA. Taking swimming, snorkel, scuba, underwater hockey and other aquatic courses.
My first waterfront head guard. Frank was an excellent mentor. As the rookie, I learned under his tutorship many skills including to row and maneuver the wooden boat through the masses of swimmers trying to make it to the tower on the hot summer days.
He taught me to be more of a risk taker and put your faith in others. Using his gymnastic skills he managed to talk me (in his deep confident voice) through the steps to stand on his shoulders and reach with both hands into the rafters of the boat house to get the oars. I don't remember ever looking for a step ladder.
Frank was my Lawrence of Arabia figure head. He often could be seen balancing himself on the bow of the boat while rowing to the tower while sporting his white sun blocking headdress gear to protect his reddening fair skin, and protruding reddish beard.
Over the years I have enjoyed knowing and listening to this thoughtful comments and jokester antics. He enjoyed getting out to the many get togethers where he would often delight us with his dry sense of humour and with his dancing skills, too.
You could count on Frank when you needed his support. When my oldest sister passed away in Toronto he was there for me keeping me company and consoling me while driving around in his old round backed Volvo.
Thank you, Frank for the great times and many memories.

Ken Rusnak (lifeguard, folksinger, teacher)

Frank was twelve years older than I am and I met him a long time ago, around 1965 at the Port Arthur YMCA. Frank was one of the senior members of the Aqua Y SCUBA club. Frank loved the water.

Frank was colorful, both literally and figuratively. The Hallmark, big red beard and big smile made him stand out at a distance and Frank was an athlete and competitive. This was initially problematic. I am also athletic, and I also like to win. Frank was more than happy to hand out lessons in the fine art of underwater hockey. At eighteen it was a hard thing to have Frank zoom into your field of view, nonchalantly remove the puck from you and then swim the length of the pool and drop it in my team’s goal. After all, he was an old man, I remember when he turned thirty, but that was fifty years ago.

Fortunately, I am a quick study and quickly when on to a winning streak that lasted months. It was easy, all you had to do was make sure you were on Frank’s team.

Frank was always a leader. When a few of us were starting to experiment with underwater photography, Frank rolled in with a movie camera in an underwater housing that had been designed by Al Giddings. Frank’s film making efforts were the first time we saw ourselves diving.

He will be greatly missed.

Wow, thanks for sharing. I am his son Peter and we had a housing that looked like that in our basement for years when I was growing up.

If there is ONE thing that us old friends remember about Frank was his red beard. That was kind of a warning that behind that red beard was a feisty, mischievous pile of "trouble" - and you just knew something was about to happen ... and very quickly!!! Lots of good memories diving with him in the 60s and 70s in Thunder Bay and in Tobermory. I actually cant go into too many of them because this site is PG and lets just say that my foggy recollection was alcohol was definitely involved!! Sure was fun!! How come Frank always seemed to have the most fun. He was a good friend and will be missed by many. Thanks for the ride Frank ... it was a hoot!!! See yah on the other side at the Mandarin - your buying the beer!! Ted still has your ID!!! RIP in peace mate!! Doug Elsey
