Obituary for VALENTINE MACHNICKI

With heavy hearts we are saddened to share the news that Valentine Machnicki (nee Stacenko) passed away September 1, 2021 surrounded by her loving family at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto.
Val passed away from COVID. She was fully vaccinated and put up a good fight but with her underlying health conditions of Lupus and Leukemia it proved too much for her body.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Especially her daughter Alana McCarthy, son-in-law Tyrone McCarthy and grandkids Kieran and Riley. Her son Kris Machnicki and his partner Danielle Corradini. Her partner of 12 years, Gordon O’Halloran and his children Kenneth O’Halloran, Karey O’Halloran and her partner Manny Maravelias. She was predeceased in 2008 by her husband Kasey Machnicki.

Val was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1950 to parents Maria and John Stacenko. She also has an older sister Luba Philpott and younger brother Tony Stacenko. The family eventually moved to Canada and settled in downtown Toronto. Val spent most of her life in Mimico, Etobicoke. Val got a part time job as a school bus driver so she could stay home and raise her kids. She enjoyed it so much she stuck with it for 30 years. After a few years of retirement she decided to get a job as an Uber driver and loved talking to her customers. Valentine, was an amazing person. She was so outgoing, always talking to strangers and making people laugh. She was one of those people who had no filter - much to the embarrassment of her kids - but it was definitely part of her unique charm. She was always up for an adventure and loved gardening, hiking and the outdoors. She was so proud of her beautiful backyard koi pond that she built herself. She could shingle a roof, pour concrete and wasn’t afraid to pick up a snake or turtle in the wild. She also loved dancing with her friends, traveling and going to movies with Gord. Val was one of those rare good hearted people. Always taking in stray animals, or caring for people who needed help.

The world has lost a truly beautiful person inside and out. Rest In Peace Valentine until we meet again. We all love you so much and you will be greatly missed.

Service provided G.H. Hogle Funeral home in Etobicoke on Wednesday September 8th. There will be a visitation 1-2 pm and a private service at 2pm. Due to Covid restrictions you must RSVP for a visitation time slot on their website and priority will be given to family. The private service will also be live-streamed on zoom.

If you want to show support please get vaccinated and urge those around you who are hesitant to do it too. It’s immune compromised people like Val who are needlessly suffering from the stronger variants.

Donations can be made in her name to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre, Lupus Canada or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada
