Andrés Carlos Díaz Bravo passed away on May 16, 2022, at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital in
Toronto at the age of 59. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Marina Papkovich, and his two sons, Alexandr and Andrew Charles, in addition to his siblings Alejandro and Carolina, and his parents Andrés Arturo and Ofelia.
Andrés was born in Havana, Cuba, on September 19, 1962, to Andrés Arturo Díaz Arenas and Ofelia Bravo Fernández. He moved to the USSR in 1981 to study Applied Mathematics at the University of Minsk, where he met Marina. They were married in Belarus in September 1985 and then spent several years living together in Cuba. Afterwards, they moved to Newfoundland in 1992, eventually settling in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario to raise their boys.
An erudite man, Andrés spoke Spanish, Russian, and English fluently, and loved technology and engineering in addition to arts and culture. He stressed the importance of knowledge and education, and found great joy in his work as a director of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo.
Andrés loved cycling along the waterfront in Toronto and was a wonderful cook, often preparing traditional Cuban meals, barbequing, and appreciating regional craft beers. He and his wife maintained a beautiful garden filled with flowers, berries, vegetables, and fruit trees. He loved music and played classical guitar, and even received compliments on his Spotify playlists.
He was an understanding, empathetic, and principled man who believed in helping others and supporting them whenever he could. Always a positive presence, he would light up a room with his stories and jokes and continued to listen and learn until his very last day. Andrés truly enjoyed and lived life to its fullest and will be dearly missed.
